French A Level at Queen Mary's College

Course description

The French AS course will build on the skills you have developed at GCSE, so extending your understanding both of the language itself and of contemporary issues. You will study topics of current interest such as sport, advertising, music, fashion and range of social and environment issues. In the second year you have the opportunity to study in depth the culture, literature and history of the countries where the language is spoken, using authentic source materials including newspapers, TV and the Internet. The AS examination consists of one written paper which tests listening, reading, grammar and writing based on the topics studied and an oral examination involving discussion of one of the AS topics and more general conversion. The A2 examination consists of one written paper requiring you to write an essay on a cultural topic, translation exercises as well as reading and listening comprehension. The oral examination consists of a short debate based on stimulus material followed by general conversation on the A2 cultural topics.
