IT Practitioners BTEC Extended Diploma - Level 3 at Redcar & Cleveland College

Course description

The BTEC Extended Diploma for IT Practitioners provides the knowledge, understanding and skills for learners wishing to enter a career as an IT practitioner or technician in the area of Information Systems, Technical Support, Networking and Software Development.

It provides progression to higher education vocational qualifications such as a BTEC HND in Computing or a full time degree in Computing or Computer Science. This course contains specialist units that broaden and deepen the learners’ experience in preparation for the world of work.

Course content

The course consists of 18 units studied over two years as follows:

Year 1 (9 units) – students will study 9 units as follows:

  • Communication and Employment Skills for IT.
  • Computer Systems.
  • Information Systems.
  • Computer Networks.
  • Spreadsheet Modelling.
  • Maintaining Computer Systems.
  • Computer Architecture.
  • Mathematics for IT Practitioners.
  • Event Driven Programming.

Year 2 (9 units) – students will study a further 9 units which will be:

  • Systems Analysis and Design.
  • Client Side Customisation of Web Pages.
  • Database Design.
  • Website Production.
  • Developing Computer Games.
  • Human Computer Interaction.
  • Controlling Systems Using IT.
  • Web Server Scripting.
  • Software Design and Development.

Entry requirements

Four GCSEs at grade C or above, one of which must be English, or BTEC IT Practitioners Level 2 with an average grade of ‘merit’ or equivalent plus English at Level 2.

Assessment

Continuous assessment based on assignments. All assessment for BTEC Diplomas is criterion-referenced, based on the achievement of specified outcomes. All units will be individually graded as Pass, Merit or Distinction. An overall grade for the qualification will then be awarded.

Future opportunities

Those students who typically gain a merit and distinction in all units will be eligible to apply for entry to a degree. Those who complete the course with passes and merits will be eligible for study on a higher vocational qualification or Foundation Degree.
