Further Mathematics AS/A Level at Reigate College

Course description

Further Mathematics leads to two A Levels in Mathematics. It includes a number of additional topics, including Discrete. It raises students’ awareness of different aspects of Mathematics in preparation for university.

Some students decide during their first year at College that they are interested in a Mathematics or a related degree course. They may then have the opportunity to add AS Further Mathematics to their 2nd year programme to enhance their application to university.

Course content

Further Mathematics develops the ideas covered in A Level Mathematics but in greater depth.  The course covers Pure Mathematics, Mechanics, Statistics and Discrete.

Pure Mathematics develops the ideas met at GCSE, such as: Algebra, Graphs, and Trigonometry. Discrete Mathematics develops the ideas used in modern technology. Statistics is the study of data. Mechanics is the study of moving objects.

Entry requirements

Students will need a Grade 7 or above in GCSE Mathematics. Students may combine this option with two  other subjects. The approach and pace reflect the fact that most Further Mathematics students will have achieved Grades 7 or above in most subjects at GCSE.

Students must have a keen interest in Mathematics and a strong aptitude for Algebra. The course is taught at a faster pace than Mathematics. Students will probably be planning to apply for a Mathematics related course at university.

There is no coursework, this subject is 100% exam.

The exam board for this AS/A Level is AQA.

Future opportunities

A Level Further Mathematics is welcomed as a qualification for a variety of Higher Education courses.

A Further Mathematics qualification is required for some subjects, such as Mathematics, Engineering and Physics, and useful for others, such as Biochemistry and Economics.

Many Mathematics graduates go on to work in Accountancy, Computing, Engineering, Management or Teaching.

Further Mathematics students have the opportunity to take part in a variety of course related experiences. In recent years, these have included:
