Mathematics - Foundation Tier GCSE at Brockenhurst College

Course description

A good grasp of basic mathematical concepts and techniques is essential to support work in a whole range of other courses.

A GCSE grade C is a requirement for many careers in employment and for most Further/Higher Education courses.

Course content

A varitey of techniques are used to aid learners who have different learning styles.  So activities are aimed at kinaesthetic, auditory and visual learners.  Some activities are aided  with the use of ICT and Tarsia decision making cards.  You will be expected to back up the work covered in college by completing homework and self study at home.

The modular nature of the course spreads out the examination load and also allows students to retake modules should this be beneficial.

A mathematics workshop is available for students to use on a drop-in basis to support those with any problems or requiring additional support.

Revision sessions for module exam preparation will also be available. Teaching methods include tutor-led sessions, tutorials and discussions, plus individual, paired and group tasks.  The College also has its own dedicated e-learning site that students can access in and out of college.

Entry requirements

D grade in GCSE Maths or equivalent.

The course consists of 3 units exams in November(number and statistics), March (number and algebra) and June (algebra and geometry).

Students will follow the AQA linear (B) Mathematics 4365 course, except for the November resit which is the same exam board as previously taken by the student.

This will be studied for up to four lessons per week for the year.  Paper 1 is non calculator (40%), Paper 2 is a calculator paper (60%).  Students have the opportunity to resit in November and if successful will finish the course.

Financial information

A charge of £6 is made to cover the cost of a geometry set along with past paper booklets for each module.

It is recommended that students obtain a CGP AQA Modular Revision Guide. This is best purchased through the College when you join in September.
