Introduction to Early Years Education & Care CACHE Level 2 Certificate at Derwentside College

Course description

The aim of this qualification is to prepare learners to work with children between birth and five years, with knowledge of children up to seven years.

Course content

The units taught are based around the following four themes: -

  • Theme 1: Introducing the role of the early years practitioner
  • Theme 2: Legislation, framework and professional practice
  • Theme 3: Play, development and learning for school
  • Theme 4: Professional development

Entry requirements

You should be at least 16 years old.

CACHE does not set any other entry requirements but Derwentside College would like you to have at least 4 D’s at GCSE.

This should include Maths and English.

It would be beneficial to have Grade C in Maths and English on entry as you will need to have this by the time of progression to Level 3.


All units will be internally assessed using a range of methods.

This could include direct observation within the workplace, a portfolio of evidence, written assignments or a task set by CACHE.

Some learning outcomes within this qualification will require assessment in a real work environment.

250 placement hours are recommended for this qualification. You will complete these in a local childcare setting.

Future opportunities

This qualification allows progression on to the CACHE Level 3 Early Years Educator qualifications and other Level 3 qualifications relating to child care.

Learners can progress into various job roles in the statutory, voluntary or private sectors such as: - Assistant in Children's Centres - Assistant in nursery schools - Pre-school worker The role would however be a supervised role.
