A Level Chemistry at Trafford College
Why study Chemistry? At advanced level, Chemistry seeks to explain why chemical reactions occur in terms of energy changes and the fundamental laws of entropy and thermodynamics. It also looks at a wide range of applications of chemical knowledge to practical situations and explores how chemists can help to solve environmental problems by cleaning up pollution and finding alternative fuels. What’s on the course? The specification is divided into topics, each covering different key concepts in Chemistry. Teaching of practical skills is integrated with the theoretical topics. In AS Chemistry:You will study atomic structure, bonding and enthalpy. In A level Chemistry:In addition to the AS topics you will cover organic Chemistry and analytical techniques.
You need A*-B in Double Science or A*-B in Chemistry plus a good profile of B grades at GCSE
Through written exams that use a variety of question types from multiple choice, structured questions and longer answersThere will be a series of compulsory practical exercises that will be tested in the written exams and contribute to a separate grade at A level
What are the career opportunities?Chemistry is essential for a range of healthcare professions and pharmacy degree courses and is a useful subject in a wide range of environmental careers. Many forensic and food scientist also start with a degree in chemistry.
