BTEC Business Studies at Uplands Community College School Sixth Form

Course description

The BTec Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma in Business covers the key theoretical areas of business knowledge as well as offering an opportunity to gain practical experience in a range of Business related fields.

This qualification is equivalent to one A Level.

Course content

The structure of the course requires learners to cover four core units, The Business Environment, Business Resources, Introduction to Marketing and Business Communication.

In addition, two further optional units have to be studied; these can be selected from specific areas of interest, which include Accounting, Marketing, Human Resources and Business Management.

It is likely that three units will be studied and completed in each of the academic years.

Entry requirements

5 A*- C grades at GCSE including grade C or above in English Language. It is not necessary to have studied Business at GCSE Level.

The BTec Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma is assessed internally. It requires students to research how real businesses operate and then write up their observations in a report format. The businesses chosen for research are at the student’s discretion although the faculty has a range of business links the students will have access to.

A summative grade for each of the six units can be awarded at pass, merit or distinction level.

Internal assessment makes the course suitable for students who are self-motivated and organised with excellent time management skills. The assessment material produced needs to be generated to meet specific learning outcomes within strict deadlines in order to achieve progression. The nature of the evidence material that needs to be submitted would make this course preferable to students who prefer kinaesthetic methods of learning and have strong independent studying abilities.

Future opportunities

The qualification allows progression academically and vocationally. The course is recognised by UCAS and earns the equivalent number of points as a standard A Level in relation to the end grade achieved. It also provides a highly specialised work-related qualification for those students keen to pursue career development opportunities in a wide range of business related disciplines.
