Course description

Do you have an interest in working in the Theatre/Live Events industry as a Technical Operator/Designer or Stage Manager?

Do you want to develop your skills and experience further? Are you interested in furthering your qualification profile with a view to progressing to a higher level course of study? If so, the Level 2 Diploma in Technical Theatre is the course for you!

This course is a practical, performance-related course that will give you an insight into the career of a Theatre Technician. Study will combine both practical and theoretical subjects helping you to develop your skills in the three areas of lighting, sound and production, as well as your knowledge of technical theatre from the perspective of a designer, an audience member and a producer.

Entry requirements

You will need to have at least:

  • 2 GCSEs at grade D / grade 3 or above including English Language, or;
  • 2 GCSEs at grade D / grade 3 or above and Level 1 or 2 Functional Skills English, or;
  • Level 1 qualification in a relevant vocational subject and either GCSE English Language at grade D / grade 3 or above or Level 1 or 2 Functional Skills English.

You will also be required to attend an audition workshop.

Mature students without formal qualifications who show commitment to the subject area may join the course following a successful interview and audition.


You will be assessed through the completion of assignments and production-related projects throughout the course. Attendance and application in all areas is essential for successful completion.
