General Studies - A Level at Moulsham High School

Course description

The General Studies specification encourages students to debate, to enquire and to test assumptions. It is based on an investigation into the three key areas of the contemporary world: culture, science and society. These three areas are integrated into four units, with overlapping themes. The themes are presented as questions and issues to explore through debate and research.

This qualification is excellent preparation for both employment and higher education, where a range of problems and conflicting perspectives have to be considered and reconciled. Through this process students will develop highly-valued study and communication skills.

Each unit is assessed through a 1 hour and 30 minute examination paper, in three sections, set and marked by Edexcel. There is no coursework.

Future opportunities

This course will compliment any other Advanced Level. It is very useful for acquiring a breadth and diversity of knowledge and, as such, is welcomed as an entrance qualification for the majority of University courses.

So what if I am not thinking of going to university?

General Studies teaches lots of good qualities and skills that can be used in the working environment. It shows a willingness to learn about the wider society and improve your understanding of the world you live in. Not all schools offer this subject so it gives you an extra strength in interviews to stand out from other candidates.
