Course description

The Level 1 Award and Diploma in Art, Design and Media will provide you with an introduction to art, design and media, encouraging engagement with education and acquisition of the knowledge, skills and understanding to progress to further education or employment within the creative industries.

The Level 1 Diploma in Art, Design and Media is designed to build on the skills, knowledge and understanding acquired through the Award and to provide an opportunity to explore, develop and test your creativity. The course will provide a base of skills and knowledge, will enhance your self-confidence and impact an understanding of the career demands and opportunities with art, design and media.

The qualification has been written with the support of University of Arts London Institutions including Camberwell College of Arts, Central Saint Martin’s College of Arts and Design, Chelsea College of Art and Design, London College of Communication, London College of Fashion and Wimbledon College of Art.

Course content

The project-based course introduces students to the following areas of Art, Design and Media:



Graphic Design



Surface Pattern Design

Mixed Media


Computer Design

Contextual Studies

Throughout the course emphasis is given to the development of individual portfolio of work, which supports applications to further study.

Students’ will progress through the course working within a variety of art and design specialist areas and complete the following units –

Firstly the Award in Art, Design & Media this will be used as a precursor to the UAL Diploma in Art, Design & Media providing the student and the college, with an early check on their interest and level of commitment to the study of the subject. The qualification will be delivered through 2 linked units providing a stimulating and supportive experience.

Award in Art, Design & Media

Unit 1 Introduction to materials, processes and technical skills in art, design and media.

Unit 2 Introduction to contextual research in art, design and media.

Upon successful completion of the above award students will then study the following qualification.

Diploma in Art, Design & Media

Unit 3 Introduction to communication skills in art, design & media.

Unit 4 Solving 2D creative problems.

Unit 5 Solving 3D creative problems.

Unit 6 Solving time-based creative problems.

Unit 7 Art, design & media project

Entry requirements

Entry Level 2 English and Maths

An interest and enthusiasm in creative arts

Applicants will be invited to attend an interview at which a portfolio of work will be reviewed. Mature candidates with appropriate experience and portfolio will also be considered


Assessment takes the form of a number of practical assignments and a Final Project. Assessment is continuous and takes place at regular times throughout the course. Planned reviews and tutorials are also completed to support student development and achievement on the course. Students will get feedback at the end of each unit or project to enable them to improve on their learning and performance. The final unit requires students to take some responsibility for their own learning through a personal project that combines planning, research, ideas, practical skills, evaluation, and presentation. On successful completion of the qualification students can achieve a Pass, Merit or Distinction.

Future opportunities

This course provides a route onto a UAL Level 2 Diploma which then provides the opportunity for preparation for employment and gives a good grounding to progress onto a more advanced course such as: BTEC Extended Diploma or 3D Graphic Design, Design, Design and Crafts, Fashion and Clothing, Fine Art, Graphic Design, Multimedia, Photography or Textiles. With further training or study, students may go into careers including Advertising, Marketing, Graphic Design, Fabric/Textile Design, Freelance Photography and Interior Design
