Computer Science A Level at St Francis Xavier 6th Form College (SFX College)

Course description

To succeed in A level Computer Science, students have to learn a high level programming language. Training and support is given but potential students should be aware that programming skills only come with considerable practice inside and outside the classroom. Interest in problem solving is paramount.

The computing curriculum is focused around developing your initial programming knowledge. In your second year, you are required to design and develop a business or learning application using industry standard software such as and SQL Server.

The course contains a wide range of topics including:

  • Hardware – the inner workings of computer systems (e.g. CPU, data and address buses)
  • Software – data processing (e.g. databases), data structures (e.g. graphs, trees, lists, stacks and queues)
  • Logic – binary gates and finite state diagrams
  • Computers in Society – the consequences of electronic systems including legislation

Entry requirements

In addition to our Programme Entry Requirements, applicants must also meet specific Course Entry Requirements:

Grade B in Maths and Grade B in English Language
Grade C in English Language is acceptable if student has Grade A in Maths, & GCSE score of at least 5.5 is advisable.


Two exams in Year 2 (80%); one in theory and the other including practical programming, both 2 hrs 30 mins.

Future opportunities

This subject is useful if you want to go on to study Computing, Computer Science or Computer Engineering at degree level. For these subjects, A level Computer Science should be supported by an A level in Mathematics. You could also pursue career options such as software development and new media production.

PLEASE NOTE: It is not necessary to take A level Computer Science in order to study Computing at university, A level Maths is sufficient. However, the learning curve is much steeper if you do not.
