The BTEC Subsidiary Diploma in Applied Science (Biology) is equivalent to one A Level and can be used alongside other qualifications for employment or University entrance.


A BTEC Subsidiary Diploma is a practical, work-related course.  You learn by completing projects and assignments that are based on realistic workplace situations.  This style of learning will allow you to not only develop your academic understanding, but also essential scientific skills such as performing  investigations which involve problem solving, independent working, team work, research, and communication skills. The core units in Year 12 combine all three areas of science – Biology, Chemistry and Physics. Year 13 will specialise in Biology centred units.

Entry requirements

Entry Requirements

A minimum of 320 GCSE points, including C grades in English, Maths and science GCSEs. You need to be well motivated, able to work on your own at times, be able to plan the use of your time and to meet deadlines


Learning Methods

Each unit will be taught through a mixture of formal teaching and practical activities.  Each unit will be marked as a pass, merit or distinction.

BTEC Subsidiary Diplomas are equivalent to A Levels or other Level 3 qualifications and are highly valued by universities, further education colleges, higher education institutions and employers. They are the most popular vocational  Further Education qualifications in the UK and are recognised and respected worldwide.

BTEC Subsidiary Diplomas earn you UCAS points: the equivalences are BTEC Subsidiary Diploma = 1 A Level which with two other A levels will enable you to go on and do an Honours or Foundation degree.
