A2 Biology at St Margaret Ward Catholic Academy - Trinity Sixth Form

Course description

During the 2 years you will be taught a wide spectrum of biologically related topics including:

  • The structure and function of cells and cell components - the building blocks of life.
  • The heart, lungs and diseases linked to them - the structure and function of 2 very important organs, as well as what diseases can affect them.
  • Classification - just how does science separate one organism from the other?
  • Energy transfers in living organisms - how do plants get their energy from the sun? How do animals unlock the energy they consume?
  • DNA technology - how science and technology are using DNA to open new avenues in research and treatment of diseases.

These are just a sample of the topics covered. There are many more included in the course.


Course content

  • What will I learn?

     1) Biological molecules: Structure and function of the building blocks of life including monosaccharides, DNA, ATP

    2) Cells: the structure of eukaryotic and prokaryotic cells and how scientists study them

    3) Organisms exchange substances with their environment: Gas exchange, digestion and absorption and mass transport in plants

    4) Genetic information, variation and relationships between organisms: Cell division, mutations, protein synthesis, adaptations, diversity in environments

    5) Energy transfers in and between organisms: Photosynthesis, respiration, food chains and nutrient cycles

    6) Organisms respond to changes in their internal and external environments: Nervous coordination and homeostasis

    7) Genetics, populations, evolution and ecosystems: Inheritance, evolution and ecosystems.

    8) The control of gene expression: Transcription, translation, recombinant DNA technology, DNA and cancer and DNA fingerprinting.

Entry requirements

 5 A* to C including English and Maths

GCSE Grade B and above in Additional Science or Biology


 Terminal assessments in Y13

 Paper 1: Topics 1 - 4

 Paper 2: Topics 5 - 6

 Paper 3: Topics 1 - 8

 All papers include assessment of practical skills and a range of question types, including extended answers, comprehension, critical analysis and an essay.

Future opportunities

 Careers for biologists exist in areas other than medicine, veterinary science, dentistry or farming. Biologists find employment in horticulture, pharmacy, biochemistry, microbiology, brewing and distilling. For courses in medicine and veterinary science it is not sufficient to be good at Biology, you must excel in all your sciences at A-level and across the board at GCSE.  For medicine some universities require you to take Biology alongside the compulsory Chemistry A-level.

Further information

All the tutors at A Level are very experienced and eager to help with problems. Lessons are all laboratory based with many opportunities to develop practical and investigative skills. 

There are opportunities to learn in many different ways including presentation to the class, discussions, independent research and group work.
