Design and Technology (3-D Design) AS/A Level at Brockhill Park Performing Arts College

Course description

This course will enable students to understand design issues in an everyday context, as well as designing for others, looking at sustainability, economic issues, product development and development of their practical skills.

The AS course consists of the Product Study which encourages students to take an everyday product and look at how to evolve and develop it further, by creating a range of prototypes and testing the prototype upon completion.

The A2 course focuses on the Design, Make and Evaluate task, where students identify a clear situation or need, and design a range of possible outcomes to satisfy their specification and client’s needs. Students then produce a range of distinct prototypes using a variety of materials and manufacturing methods including CAD CAM. The final prototype is then manufactured, tested with the client and then feedback and modification to the design can be undertaken to make a commercially viable product.

The Product Design written examination reflects closely on this process and will require students to have a clear understanding and experience of the Design Process and an awareness of the role of design in society.
