A Level Leisure Studies at Appleby Heritage Centre

Course description

Leisure Studies encourages candidates to develop broad skills, knowledge and understanding of the leisure industry. It prepares candidates for further study or training in the leisure industry or related occupations. The aim of the award is to encourage candidates to :

Develop an understanding of the native, structure, scale, range and importance of the leisure industry within the UK and Europe.

Develop skills and techniques related to participation, leadership and organisation within the leisure industry.

Develop an understanding of the current issues, working practices and procedures of the leisure industry.

Recognise the contribution and impact of technology of the leisure industry and its potential effect on the immediate future.

Develop an understanding and appreciation of the benefits of a healthy and active lifestyle.

Develop an interest in leisure in a vocational context.






Course content

AS Examination:

Unit 1: Exploring Leisure

Unit 2: Customer Service in The Leisure Industry

Unit 3: Leisure Industry practice


A2 Examination:

Unit 4: Event Management

Unit 5: Human Resources in The Leisure Industry

Unit 6: Leisure in The Outdoors


Entry requirements

Students are normally expected to have 4 GCSEs at Grades A*-C.



Two thirds of the modules are assessed through the completion of a portfolio, with the remaining units being assessed through external examination.

Future opportunities

The qualification is graded A-E and attracts the standard UCAS tariff points. It is a good insight for those who may wish to study Hospitality at university or who are considering employment.
