Course description

AS Food Technology
At AS you will have the opportunity to study
nutrition as well as a design and make
activity. You will develop your knowledge of
food science and a range of food materials
and components used in the making of food
products. You will study two units throughout
the year:
Unit 1 - Materials, components and
application.
This involves the study of nutrition, changing
eating patterns, food safety and factors
affecting the design of new food products.
This is an examined unit worth 50% of the AS
marks and 25% of the A2 total.
Unit 2 - Coursework
You will produce a design portfolio to
investigate a problem and develop a suitable
design proposal which will involve making
and testing your design idea.This is a written
portfolio worth 50% of the AS marks and 25% of
the A2 total.
A2 Food Technology
The A2 will allow you to further develop your
knowledge and practical skills from AS. You
will develop your design work alongside an
understanding of food science, processes and
commercial food manufacture. You will study
two units throughout the A2:

Unit 3 - Design and Manufacture

This involves the study of the physical and
chemical structure of nutrients; the working
characteristics of food and the effects on
manufacture and product development; the
effects of micro organisms and methods of
preservation to extend shelf life.
This is an examined unit worth 25% of the
total A2 marks
Unit 4 - Coursework
You will produce a design portfolio
concentrating on a chosen design proposal
and how this could be manufactured. This is
a written portfolio worth 25% of the total A2
marks

Entry requirements

AS/A2 levels (2 years)
5 or more Grades at B or above, all of which
must come from separate courses.
In line with other institutions, we also expect
higher grade passes in Maths and English, in
order to access Level 3 courses.
To take Maths AS/A2, you must have at least
an A grade in order to take up the course
In the larger, on-line prospectus there are
entry requirements for each subject. In general,

at least a B grade is required to take
a subject at AS/A2 level
