Physical Education AS/A at Ormskirk School

Course description

Ormskirk School is in its eleventh year of offering A’ level Physical Education to its students. In June 1992 the first entrants were successful in taking the examination and the pass rate for students continues to be above the national average. The school is keen to attract students from West Lancashire who would be interested in taking the course. The school has a strong sporting tradition at local, county and national level. The Physical Education staff are highly qualified and committed teachers, keenly interested in the progress of each student. They are friendly and experienced and welcome new students from outside the school. Facilities include the Sports Hall, Gymnasium, Sports’ Field, PE Room and Sixth Form Accommodation. The school has close links with many local leisure and sports clubs. The course takes a multi-disciplinary approach, encouraging the development of different methods of enquiry drawn from a wide range of disciplines, with the focal point being the performer and the performance. The specification is based on the inter-action between the theory and practice of Physical Education. It is recommended that students have a strong interest in a variety of Physical Education areas have represented their school or a club up to A’ level achieved an A or B grade at GCSE achieve a GCSE Theory score of at least 60% scheme of assessment The Advanced Subsidiary (AS) forms 50% of this assessment weighting of the full A' level. AS can be taken as a stand alone qualification or as the first part of the full A' level course. AS candidates take units 1, 2 and 3 in Year 12 and ‘A’ level candidates take units 4, 5 and 6 in Year 13.

Future opportunities

You could take this course with other advanced level courses such as Science to prepare for higher education in areas of Sport Studies, Recreation, Exercise and Science or more general higher education courses. With further training you could go into a job related to Physical Education such as a Physiotherapist, Teacher, Exercise or Fitness Trainer. The course will also help you develop the skills, understanding and knowledge that many employers across lots of industries are looking for, especially in the sporting sectors.
