Photography AS & A Level at Brine Leas School

Course description

In order to study this course you should have a real passion for digital and traditional Photography. You should be willing to experiment with creative presentation techniques and have an artistic flair. Additionally, you should want to develop darkroom and digital image manipulation techniques. Throughout the course, you must be able to express your ideas in visual and written forms and employ creative approaches that go beyond mere observation and recording. At A2 level you will be required to write a contextual assignment as part of the course. Skills, techniques and ideas will be developed to create further, more advanced work.

Course content

In the first year you will produce a portfolio of coursework based upon a given theme. You will experiment with digital and traditional photographic methods, develop your camera skills and use different presentation techniques. Additionally, you will learn about a number of well established photographers and use their work to inspire your portfolio. You will then be given an externally-set assignment where you will create ideas in response to a given question. Your coursework accounts for 25% of the overall A2 award and the externally-set assignment accounts for another 25%.

In the second year you will be given a broad theme to create a more indepth and independent coursework portfolio and you will be given another externally-set assignment to create ideas in response to one of the eight exciting starting points you will be given. During the second year, 25% of the A Level marks will be awarded for your coursework, which will include a 1000 - 3000 word essay and the externally-set assignment accounts for the other 25%.
