King Edward VI College, Nuneaton

The King Edward VI College Sports Academy is a development scheme dedicated to sports training and education.  The academies run in partnership with Nuneaton's prestigious and well-established Football, Rugby Union, Netball, and Cricket Clubs.  Each academy is designed to give aspiring young players the chance to develop their skills through high quality day time coaching whilst also gaining recognised sport-related academic qualifications.

The Rugby Union Academy development scheme is in partnership with Nuneaton Rugby Football Club and enables talented 16-19 year olds who aspire to develop opportunities in Rugby Union. Students on the Academy receive training from experienced RFU qualified coaches with a minimum Level 2 coaching award, many with professional playing experience. The College Rugby Academy team will compete in the BCS Leagues and national Cups on Wednesday afternoons. All students will be entered on RFU Rugby Level 1 coaching award as well as the Sports Leaders Level 2 award.

Course content

What Training is Involved?

  • Day time individual training and team coaching - 2 per week.
  • Individual player assessments and development.
  • Individual fitness profiling.
  • Diet and nutrition.
  • Governing Body coaching and refereeing qualifications.
  • League fixtures and National Cup competitions.

Entry requirements

Players would be expected to be part of a club although enthusiastic non-club players are welcome. Alongside the Rugby Academy players will choose a full time academic programme of study.

To be eligible for any of the Sports Academy options you must have one of the following courses as part of your programme of study:

  • AS / A Level Physical Education
  • Level 3 BTEC National Certificate in Sport
  • Level 3 BTEC National Extended Diploma in Sport

Financial information

Enrolment onto any of the Academies is free but students will be expected to purchase College PE and Sport kit needed for their academic courses.  College will heavily subsidise entry onto the NGB Level 1 and 2 coaching courses but students will be expected to make a contribution towards costs.  Level 1 - £50, Level 2 - £100.  Student bursaries are available for those who qualify.

Additional Qualifications

In addition to this students have the opportunity to undertake Level 1 Certificate in Coaching rugby (with possible progression to level 2 if suitable), Officiating courses as well as the nationally recognised Sports Leaders Awards.


Trials will be taking place during the summer term.
