Business Vocational A-Level at Gateacre School

Course description

The GCE Applied Business ‘Single Award’ is the equivalent of one A Level. Students can study this subject for one year and obtain an AS qualification or study for two years and obtain the full A Level qualification. For the AS qualification 3 units of work must be completed and for the full A Level qualification 6 units of work must be completed (usually 3 in year 12 and 3 in year 13).

Course content

The GCE Applied Business is a qualification for people who wish to follow careers or courses in one of the many areas of business. This qualification helps students to gain access to higher-level qualifications, such as the Higher National Diploma, a Degree or they can go straight into work. It can prepare them for a range of jobs in the public, private and voluntary sectors, such as: Accountancy, Financial Services, Sales and Marketing, Personnel Management, Retailing, Public Administration, Manufacturing and Production.


AS - Areas of Study

Students will complete 3 units from the following:

  • Investigating People at Work
  • Investigating Business
  • Investigating Marketing
  • Investigating Customer Service
  • Investigating Promotion
  • Investigating Enterprise
A2 – Areas of Study

Students will complete 3 further units from the following:

  • Business Development
  • Managing and Developing People
  • Marketing Decisions
  • Impact of Finance on Business Decisions
  • International Dimensions of Business
  • Organising an Event
  • External Influence on Business

The programme also develops key skills in the following areas: communication, application of number, ICT, working with others, improving own learning and performance, problem solving.

Entry requirements

Four or five GCSEs at grade C or above which should normally include Mathematics and English. In exceptional circumstances, candidates with slightly lower qualifications may be admitted to the course after interview.

If students drop this course at the end of Year 12 they will receive an AS qualification for completing 3 mandatory units.

It is not necessary to have studied Business at GCSE level to do this course although it is an advantage as most students have already completed the GCSE Business Qualification.


The programme is assessed mainly through completing coursework. There are also 2 external written tests over the two year programme, one in year 12 and the other in year 13.
