History - Modern European GCE AS/A Level at Richmond-upon-Thames College

Course description

History is the study of past events which uses a narrative to examine and analyse the sequence of those events and sometimes attempts to investigate, objectively, the reasons that caused them. This course focuses on the three big European powers of the 20th century, Germany, Russia and Great Britain, and their contrasting fortunes as the century progressed.

Course content

This course will cover the three significant powers in Modern European History, Germany, Italy and Great Britain. The course will cover Germany from the end of the First World War, Weimar and the Nazi trauma through division and re-unification in 1990. The course will also cover Italian Fascism up to 1946. The second year coursework option will be based on an aspect of modern German history. The second year will also see students study British social history.

Entry requirements

You will need an average GCSE points score of 5 including GCSE English at grade 6 or History at grade B.


20% coursework, 80% exams

Financial information

You will need to pay for conferences, trips, visits, fieldwork, textbooks and some printed workbooks. Total cost should not exceed £70 for each year of the course.

Future opportunities

The skills that history A level develops are highly prized in higher education and by employers. Only a minority of AS/A level students and history graduates go on to use the subject in a related career like teaching, research or museum work. Journalism, the Civil Service and law view history skills as indispensable. Advertising, leisure management, market research and even computing value the investigative and analytical skills of history.
