Course description

Year 12

Knowledge and understanding

At KS5 Art and Design covers

  • the development of ideas
  • experimentation with media
  • developing and applying skills
  • researching, recording, analysing and reviewing ideas and the creation and presentation of personal outcome(s).


Students will

  • create a rich visual language within the context of selected ideas
  • demonstrate skilful use of the formal elements, including line, tone, colour, shape
  • experiment with a wide range of media and methods in developing these skills
  • use materials and techniques to explore the potential of ideas
  • develop and communicate ideas through an informed use of visual language
  • produce outcome(s)

Year 13

Knowledge and understanding

At A2 level students produce a more in-depth critical analysis in the form of their Personal Study presentation. This takes the form of a study in book/folder form, which includes both written and visual analysis. The written text must be between 1000 and 3000 words.


Students will

  • use informed critical written/verbal/visual language within the context of their selected study
  • make connections with their practical work for this unit
  • demonstrate understanding of the ways in which artists have used visual language and formal elements to communicate their ideas
  • select and explore appropriate methods to research, record and develop their personal study
  • experiment with different structures and formats for developing and presenting their investigation
  • develop and communicate their understanding through informed use of written/verbal/visual language 


Work for both AS and A2 is assessed throughout by teachers and through peer and self assessment.

There are two elements for both final assessments, Units 1, worth 60% of final mark is submitted March of yr12/13, and the Externally set project, worth 40% of final mark is completed in May of yr12/13. Both are internally assessed and moderated by a visiting examiner from the board.
