Sport Level 3 at Northampton College

Course description

This is a 1 year course that consists of units, which are a mix of practical and theoretical. All units must be passed in order to achieve the qualification and progress on to the second year of the programme and on to the National Extended Diploma in Sport.The course is made up of units which must be passed in order to achieve this qualification.Units include:- Principles of Anatomy- Physiology of Fitness- Training and Fitness for Sport- Psychology for Sports Performance- Coaching- Assessing Risks in Sport- Practical Team Sports- Fitness Testing for Sport and Exercise- Exercise and Healthy LifestyleA number of other National Governing Body qualifications may be possible, through the College's enrichment programme. In year 2 the option of taking Level 2 Gym Instruction Certificate is offered. The method of learning is a mixture of tutor led, role play and practical sessions. Tutors expect full participation in practical lessons.

Course content

The course is aimed at those who are interested in Sport and Fitness and would like to either progress onto Higher Education or seek employment in a related area.

Entry requirements

Four GCSEs at Grade C or above including English and preferably Mathematics or a related Level 2 qualification at Merit plus GCSE English at Grade C or above.


There are no externally set assessments within this course and varying methods of internal assessment will be used e.g. observation of practical lessons, professional discussions, written tasks, presentations and coaching.

Future opportunities

Following successful completion you may progress to the National Extended Diploma in Sport and then a degree in Sport or a related discipline, such as Sport and Exercise Science; PE teacher-training; or employment within a gym, sport and leisure complex or within the coaching fields.

Further information

Students have the opportunity to participate in enrichment activities from the wide range of enrichment activities available. This includes possible entry to the College Football Team.Students are expected to behave, be punctual and dress appropriately at all times. Trips and materials costs are as follows:- Uniform (non-marking soles)- £65 Trips and visits - £35 Uniform- Materials (book/padlock)We would ask you to be prepared to pay these costs at enrolment and are non-refundable deposits.Students aged 19 and over at the start of the course will be required to pay Awarding Board fees of approximately £180 at enrolment.
