Art and Design - A Level at Kings Norton Girls' School & Sixth Form

Course description

Many of our students choose to continue with their Art & Design education at A Level, and for most this is a smooth transition as the methods of working and assessment are not dissimilar to GCSE. In our Sixth Form students have five hours of lessons a week and are expected to do at least the same again in independent study time. There is an art studio provided for the Sixth Form students to continue working outside of their lessons and there is open access to all studios after school.

Course content

A Level is a two year course comprised of two components. Module 1 is an in-depth personal investigation of a theme or subject chosen by the student, worth 60% of the final grade. Before commencing this component, in their first term, they are introduced to a foundation of skills, techniques and processes in a breadth of 2D and 3D media. Component 2 is an externally set assignment worth 40% of the final grade where students choose from a list of starting points set by the exam board. Students develop their ideas using the extensive skills and understanding they have accumulated since the start of the course. This component concludes with 15 hours of unaided, supervised time allowing students to produce a high quality and highly personal response to the theme.

A Level Art & Design is by no means a ‘soft’ subject choice, as success requires intellectual stamina, risk-taking, personal reflection and original thought, in addition to a high level of skill with a range of media and processes. It is also incredibly rewarding, for similar reasons.

To exercise curiosity and inform the development of ideas, the department organises gallery trips, regional, national and further afield.

Entry requirements

A minimum of a grade 6 at GCSE level Art and Design or related subject.

Exam Board: AQA
