Hairdressing Level 1 Diploma at Furness College

Course description

For a party night out, or a new look you’ll learn all the latest techniques in the Salon. From hair extensions, to styling, cutting, colouring, perming and plaiting – you’ll be a popular friend to have.

Course content

Units studied may include: an introduction to the hair and beauty sector, presenting a professional image in a salon, following health and safety in the salon, the art of dressing hair, working with others in the hair and beauty sector, creating a hair and beauty image, creating and maintaining retail displays in the salon, salon reception duties, colouring hair using temporary colour, shampoo and conditioning, plaiting and twisting hair and styling women's hair.

Every full-time course will include a real experience of work.

Maths and English form part of this course and will be assessed at the relevant levels.

You will learn by working in a realistic salon environment at your own pace. Before practical work begins you will study the underpinning knowledge required through assignment work and your tutors will demonstrate the skills necessary.

Entry requirements

There are no formal entry requirements for this qualification only a willingness to learn. You will be required to attend an interview and a diagnostic assessment for Literacy and Numeracy which will enable us to place you on the right course.


All the practical work is assessed in salon on clients and practical and oral questions prove knowledge. There are assignments and written tests. A portfolio of evidence is built up throughout the course.

Financial information

This is a professional qualification and high standards of personal appearance and conduct will be required. Most assessments are carried out in the salon and must be to a professional standard.

The dress code for this course is purple tunic and brown trousers, brown cardigan, flat brown shoes, fob watch and name badge (these can be ordered through College). You will be required to purchase a beauty kit with general items that will enable you to practice at home.

The college provides all other equipment and tools needed for the course.

• Level 2 Diploma in Beauty Therapy General
• Level 2 Diploma in Hair and Media Make-up

Progression is based on aptitude and a successful interview.
