Course description

This course offers opportunities for learners to explore the practical and academic study of key the areas of dance.

Course content

The course considers and explores the contemporary developments of dance genres, styles, practitioners and performance techniques. The course has a strong emphasis on a practical approach to studying this area and learners participate in a wide variety of productions and performance projects. This programme guides learners through the complete creative process of devising and putting on a show. There are core modules and specialist units, including:

  • Dance appreciation
  • Choreography
  • Contemporary dance
  • Jazz dance
  • Classical ballet
  • Tap dance
  • Site specific performance
  • Dance improvisation
  • Physical theatre
  • Contextual studies
  • Collaborative performance projects
  • Urban dance

Entry requirements

Four GCSEs at grade 9–4 (A*–C), including English. A merit at level 2. Exceptional entry may be possible if a high level of skill in dance can be demonstrated. People over 19 without formal qualifications will be considered.

Assessment

Your tutors will closely monitor and guide you through the course to ensure you reach your potential. You will have personal one-to-one tutorials to review progress regularly.

Future opportunities

You will be prepared for higher education courses at dance schools or conservatoires, university or our FdA in Dance taught at the WISE Campus.

Employment within the performing arts industry, teaching, freelance work or within arts administration.
