Course description

Our motor vehicle courses include lots of opportunities for you to get hands-on experience of the world of work, including:

Motor vehicle courses at NHC provide a structured framework in which you’ll develop the knowledge and practical skills necessary for a successful and fulfilling career in the sector. Courses are offered at different levels of entry. This means that, no matter what previous qualifications you’ve achieved, we’ll have a course suitable for you. Opportunities for career progression after our courses include mechanic, body repairer or automotive technician.

  • Vehicle technology: this course will introduce you to the retail automotive maintenance and repair sector by looking at the principles of vehicle construction, engine components and operation, steering and suspension systems as well as component fitting, tyre and braking system checks. You’ll also cover workshop tools and equipment, and health and safety.

Course content

Through this course you’ll learn about:

  • Spark and compression ignition engines S.I. & C.I.
  • Cooling and lubrication systems
  • Steering, suspension and brakes
  • Wheels and tyres
  • Transmissions
  • Lighting
  • Vehicle body repair and paint
  • Welding.

Entry requirements

There are no formal entry requirements for this course. We’ll use your interview to make sure it’s the right course for you.


This course is assessed through assignments, projects, practical and online tests. You’ll also sit exams if you’re doing maths or English GCSE or functional skills.

    • The Stevenage Skills Centre, opened in partnership with Hertfordshire Investing in Communities, is a vocational training facility, offering a wide range of full and part-time courses, including Apprenticeships and diplomas and is the first of its kind in the area.

      The purpose-built facility consists of five large converted factory units. The units have been divided up to provide the optimum learning atmosphere and experience for students.

      The equipment used in the skills centre is state-of-the-art, and is recommended for learning purposes by experts in each industry. The centre also has a number of classrooms, allowing space for theoretical learning to support the courses offered.

      There is also a refectory serving hot and cold food which has computers for students to use, as well as table football for student downtime.
