Computer Science (IB Higher Level) at Bexley Grammar School

Course description

Students will gain valuable programming skills and an in depth knowledge of how a Computers Hardware and Software operate.

Course content

The core programme has four topics; these are studied by all Standard and Higher Level students. Higher Level students study three additional topics which extend their breadth and depth of knowledge in Computer Science.

Higher Level core

The topics that must be studied, including some practical work, are:

Topic 1: System fundamentals

Topic 2: Computer organization

Topic 3: Networks

Topic 4: Computational thinking, problem-solving and programming

Higher Level Only

The topics that must be studied, including some practical work, are:

Topic 5: Abstract data structures

Topic 6: Resource management

Topic 7: Control

Entry requirements

It is not necessary to have studied ICT at GCSE though an interest in computers and computer programming is required. Prospective Higher Level students should be competent in Mathematics.

Future opportunities

The course will serve as excellent preparation for any student who wishes to study Computer Science, Mathematics, Business Computing or Engineering/Science at University.
