French A level at Holly Lodge 11-19 Science College

Course description

Students study technological and social change, looking at diversity and the benefits it brings. They will study highlights of French-speaking artistic culture, including francophone music and cinema, and learn about political engagement and who wields political power in the French-speaking world.

Students also explore the influence of the past on present-day French-speaking communities. Throughout their studies, they will learn the language in the context of French-speaking countries and the issues and influences which have shaped them. Students will study texts and film and have the opportunity to carry out independent research on an area of their choice.

Course content

Year 1

  • 1. Media; Television, Communication Technology and Advertising.
  • 2. Popular Culture; Cinema, Music, Fashion and Trends.
  • 3. Healthy lifestyle/Living; Sport/exercise, Health and well-being, Holidays.
  • Family/Relationships; Relationships within the family, Friendships and Marriage/Partnerships.

Year 2

  • 1. Environment; Pollution, Energy and Protecting the planet.
  • 2. The Multicultural Society; Immigration, Integration and Racism.
  • 3. Contemporary Social Issues; Wealth and Poverty, Law and Order, Impact of scientific and technological progress.
  • 4. Plus two of five cultural topics for Independent study.

Entry requirements

At least a grade C or above in French GCSE.

Assessment

Year 1 Examination

Unit 1

2 hours

Listening, Reading and Writing 70% of the total AS marks

35% of the total A-level marks

Unit 2

French

35 minutes

(including 20 minutes preparation time)

Speaking 30% of the total AS marks

15% of the total A-level marks

Year 2 Examination

Unit 3

French

2½ hours

Listening, Reading and Writing 35% of the total A-level marks

Unit 4

French

35 minutes

(including 20 minutes preparation time)

Speaking 15% of the total
