Textiles AS & A Level at Banbury Academy

Course description

This course is designed for students who have an interest in Fashion and Textiles and who wish to develop their skills, knowledge and understanding. You will have the opportunity to work in a range of techniques including embroidery, fabric printing, batik, and ICT.

Course content

AS level

  • Component One: Personal Investigation – 60%
    Students will embark on a personal journey around a selected theme. They will explore the work of other artists and along with their own primary sources they will record ideas, experiment with materials and processes before producing a personal response.
  • Component Two: Externally Set Assignment – 40%
    Five different theme choices will be released by AQA on 1st February giving students time to generate and explore ideas. They will then produce a portfolio of written and practical work before producing their final outcome in a 10 hour examination.

A level

  • Component One: Personal Investigation – 60%
    This unit of work involves three major elements around a personally selected theme: supporting studies and preparation work, a personal practical outcome and a written study of between 1000 and 3000 words.
  • Component Two: Externally Set Assignment – 40%
    Eight different theme choices will be released by AQA on 1st February giving students time to generate and explore ideas. They will then produce a portfolio of written and practical work before producing their final outcome in a 15 hour examination.

Future opportunities

There are many choices open to students following an A ‐ level qualification in Textiles. Many choose to go on to study at Foundation level at a local college before embarking on an appropriate degree course. A’ Level Textiles provides many further opportunities for further study especially when combined with other creative courses and may lead to careers in Fashion Design, Fashion Illustration, Textile Design, Interior Design or Photography
