BTEC Public Services Level 2 at The Thetford Academy
Course description
GENERAL AIMS: To develop students’ knowledge
and understanding of a variety of uniformed
and non-uniformed Public Services.
COURSE OUTLINE: The course is assignment based with
no examination. Students will complete 7 units that cover
a variety of skills and requirements to be a member of the
Public Services. The course will look at how to develop a
career in the Public Services, the need for leadership and
teamwork. Entry requirements and the skills needed to
be considered among other key aspects. The one-year
course will prepare students to take the level 3 course.
The Units covered are:
Unit 1 - Public Service skills
Unit 2 - Employment opportunities
in the Uniformed Public See
Unit 4 - Career Planning for the Public Services
Unit 5 - Improving Health and Fitness for
entry to the Uniformed Public Services
Unit 8 - Adventurous activities and
Teamwork in the Public Services
Unit 9 - Sport and recreation in the
Uniformed Public Services
Unit 11 - Law and its impact on the Individual
Students are required to complete between 3 and 5
assignments for the different units, through a variety
of activities including, practical assessment, posters,
leaflet, written reports and group presentations.
NATURE OF STUDY: Students will receive teacher led
lessons, with the group aiming to develop interactive
communication skills with peers. Students will be
expected to contribute to question and answer debates,
as well as create and develop new skills relating to a
variety of practical activities taken on by different
Public Services. Students will represent the school
on trips, including RAF camps, Police Investigation
Centres and Fire Stations, where the students will
see, analyse and review real life scenarios.
Entry requirements
Sixth Form Entry
Year 12
A Levels
5 A*-C at GCSE, including a C in English + Mathematics,
with a B grade in the chosen subject areas for A Level.
BTEC Level 3
4 A*-C, preferably including a C in English + Mathematics.
BTEC Level 2
2 D grades.
Year 13
Each student’s work is reviewed at the end of
Year 12 and progress into Year 13 is dependent on
satisfactory performance in the examinations.
