English Language at Poole Grammar School

Course description

This course aims to develop interest in the use of English through linguistic analysis: students will undertake a varied programme of reading, and develop listening skills, as they learn about the structures and functions of the English Language. It will give students a wider view of the cultural variations in the language and teach them to analyse its structure and express themselves clearly and accurately both in speaking and writing.

Students will develop the ability to examine language (in a wide variety of conventions) in use, gaining an understanding of how it works and the forces that shape it. They will develop a critical insight into effective writing, and will have the opportunity put their understanding to practical use by producing their own writing, again in a wide variety of contexts.

Entry requirements

Places on AS Level courses can, subject to available places, normally be offered to applicants who meet the minimum course requirements. These are usually based on the applicant’s best 8 GCSE results, including English and Mathematics, with a minimum of 344 points, with an A* A or B grade in the subjects chosen - or a related discipline, if appropriate (in Mathematics, the minimum grade of B must be at Higher Tier).
