History A Level at George Stephenson High School

Course description

YEAR 1:

Component 1; Breadth Study, the study of historical developments over a period of about 100 years

You will study 50% of this component in Year 1.

Component 2; Depth Study, the study in depth of a major historical change or development. You will study majority of the content of this component in Year 1.

Students will take the AS Level Component 1 and 2 examination at the end of Year 1 but this will not count towards the final A Level and can only be used as an AS qualification if the students then does not continue into Year 2. These AS examinations are based on 50% of the content of both components.

YEAR 2:

Component 1; Breadth Study, the study of historical developments over a period of about 100 years.
You will study the second 50% of this component in Year 2.

Component 2; Depth Study, the study in depth of a major historical change or development This is a study of Russia from the revolution in 1917 to the end of the rule of Stalin. You will complete the content in this component in Year 2.

Component 3; Historical Investigation, a personal study in the form of a question which spans approximately 100 years.

Entry requirements

At least 5 GCSE grades A* to C, including a grade B or above in History (if previously studied at GCSE)

Assessment

This course is made up of 3 components.
Component 1; worth 40% of A Level. A written exam of 2 hours 30 mins in 2 sections, including the evaluation of historical interpretations.

Component 2; worth 40% of A Level. A written exam of 2 hours 30 mins in 2 sections, including evaluation of primary sources.

Component 3; worth 20% of A Level. 3,000-3,500 word essay marked by teachers and moderated by AQA.
