AS/A2 English Language at Sandringham School
The course provides a natural progression from studies of GCSE English Language. It enables a development of an interest in English through learning about its structures, functions, development and variations, as well as developing professional writing skills. The course is especially suitable for anyone interested in studying English Language, Linguistics or Creative Writing at a higher level; and anyone thinking about a teaching career.
Students study the following topics in Year 12 in order to attain the AS qualification:
- Textual variation and analysis
- Representation (language in the media)
- Language diversity
- Attitudes to language diversity
- Directed writing
All assessment in Year 12 is in the form of examinations.
Students study the following topics in Year 13 for the full A Level qualification.
- Children’s language development
- Language change
- Attitudes to language change
- International varieties of English
Assessment in Year 13 is by a combination of two coursework pieces (language investigation and/or original writing worth 20% in total) and examination. Examinations include content from both the Year 12 and Year 13 topics.
Grade B in English Language
The course expects you to have a genuine interest and enthusiasm for learning about the English language, as well as an ability to independently manage your workload and meet deadlines effectively. You are expected to attend all lessons and tutorials, as well as read widely around the subject and act upon the advice given by teachers.
