Course description

The Btec Level 3 Extended Diploma in Applied Science is a brilliant starting point for anyone who would like to develop a career in science. Within the course you will cover a wide range of topics spanning across Biology, Physicsand Chemistry, as well as developing a higher level of practical skills in laboratory and research work.

The Btec course is one that will allow you to be hands on and with plenty of opportunities to put into practice all the theory you will have learnt.

There are no external examinations and the qualification is all Coursework based, this means that you will gain a very clear understanding of the progress you make throughout the course. This will help you to plan and achieve the goals you have set out for yourself

The course is taught by subject specialists, with laboratory experience, your learning will be based on completing laboratory based practical assignments, as well as self study supported work, presentations and discussions. All this will be based on real workplace situations, activities and demands where you will have to link the theory with the real world.

This is a two year full time course , offering a total of 360 UCAS points for university applications (an equivalent of 3 A-levels)

Course content

Here you will have an amalgamation of theoretical and practical topics in a well-equipped environment; the course covers a broad range of science topics allowing you to experience the full extent of the world of science, helping you to identify areas of interest, importance and your future specialisms.

Biology – including physiology of the human body, genetics and biomedical techniques

Physics – Electrical circuits and electronics, Medical physics, Energy changes, sources and applications

Chemistry – Applications and techniques of chemistry, Chemistry for technicians and Biochemistry

General Science – Working in the science industry, Perceptions of science, Science fundamentals and Scientific practical techniques

Mathematics – Mathematical and Statistical tools for science

Assessment

There are no external examinations as the qualification is all coursework based.

Future opportunities

We have had outstanding results in the first 2 years of delivering this course, with students progressing to excellent universities such as Surrey, UCL, Queen Mary,  Bristol and Brunel Universities on a variety of courses including Biomedical Science, Biochemistry, Pharmaceutical Science , including non scientific related career paths.
