Music A level at St Robert of Newminster Roman Catholic School

Course description

If you enjoy playing and composing music, and have a desire to learn more about
how it actually works, then Music can be a very rewarding choice at AS or A2
Level. Music is a versatile subject and can easily be combined with other subjects
from the Arts, Languages, Sciences, Humanities and Maths. Music at AS and A2
Level is an incredibly diverse subject and allows you to develop a variety of skills
that will be of use in other subjects, as well as in Higher Education and eventual
employment. An appreciation and understanding of music is also something, of
course, that you can keep with you and enjoy for a lifetime!

Course content

What will you be learning?

Within the general course there are options all owing

flexibility according the student’s strengths and interests. The content is related to the following units of study:‐

Units 1 and 4 ‐ Performing

Units 2 and 5 – Composing

Units 3 and 6 ‐ Musical Understanding and Appraising.ICT can be used in Units 1, 2 and 5.

 

Entry requirements

GCSE Music to a C Grade and a level of grade 4 or above in either instrumental or vocal skills.

What skills will I develop?

Listening, analysing, composing, performing, communiating and evaluative skills are the key to success as well as enhanced vocal or instrumental skills.

Ideal previous learning and background:

Instrumental/vocal tuition to grade 4 standard.  It is expected that A level students take part in one or more of the extra curricular groups that are on offer and participate/contribute to school concerts and Masses as and when might be appropriate.  As well, students have to attend instrumental lessons either in or out of school.
