Physical Education A Level at New Charter Academy & 6th Form

Course description

Are you someone who likes to keep physically fit? Are you interested in how the body works in sport?  Do you play sport to a high level? Are you interested in the impact sport has on society?  This is a course for people who regularly take part in sport and wish to develop their knowledge of the physical, social and mental aspects of physical activity.

It is a study of all aspects of the human form during physical activity.  It takes into consideration how the human body moves and works. The physiology of how movement occurs. As well as how the lungs, heart, blood and muscles bring about movement in sport. This section focuses on the human biology and chemical processes.  Your physical fitness will be tested in a variety of ways, with a focus on personal improvement. A healthy diet will also be focused upon and its impact on a healthy and active lifestyle.  The course also focuses on psychological aspects of sport such as; how we learn and develop skills, the use of memory in sport and how we process information. The impact of sport and society, with all its benefits is also an integral part of this course. We strive for you to study, develop and gain knowledge of the importance in sport in all its forms.

Course content

Students will examine themselves as sports people as well as the world of sport. They will work towards being able to teach others, improve their own performance and understand what makes a champion.


The course will also give students the opportunity to gain coaching qualifications. Students will develop your knowledge and understanding of how different factors combine together to influence performance.


You will also develop an understanding of how performance can be improved through practice, training and by analysis and evaluation.

Unit 1 – PHED1

Opportunities for and the effects of leading a healthy and active lifestyle (2 hr written exam 60%)

  • Applied exercise physiology- understanding how the body and its systems lead to a healthy and active lifestyle.
  • Skill acquisition – how we receive, process and acquire information in sport. 
  • Opportunities for participation- how we become involved in sport and its differing forms.

Unit 2 – PHED2

Analysis and evaluation of physical activity as a performer and/or in an adopted role/s(40%)

  • Practical Coursework- presentation, analysis and external marking of 2 sports. 

Entry requirements

You need to meet the stated Academy entry requirements for AS/A2 courses and have a B grade or above in GCSE Physical education and/or C grade or above in one of the following; GCSE additional science GCSE in applied science (double award).


The A-Level qualification in Physical Education is an exciting course aimed at giving you a more detailed knowledge of the sporting world. The course offers variety and is enjoyable to all students especially those who like sport. If you like sport, play on a regular basis, are interested in all the benefits of physical activity. If you think sport is important in a healthy lifestyle and you strive to be an active person daily. This is the course could be for you.
