Sociology AS/A Level at Benton Park School

Course description

A-level Sociology offers students the opportunity to develop the essential knowledge and understanding of central aspects of sociological thought and methods. It is designed to encourage students to demonstrate the application of a range of skills and consider the integration of sociological themes:

Year 1/AS :

Education and Methods Families & Households Theory and Methods

Year 2:

Beliefs in Society Crime & Deviance Theory & Methods

Entry requirements

Access to the Sixth Form is based on prior academic achievement, behaviour and attendance records. Students must attain at least 5 A* - C grades including English and Maths. Some subjects may have specific criteria.


2 exams at the end of Y12 (2 x 50% of AS Level, 60 marks, 1 hour 30 minutes)

3 exams at the end of Year 13 (3x 33.3% of A Level, 80 marks, 2 hours)

Sociology can lead to and support various progression pathways including:

Social Science degree courses: Sociology, Criminology, Social Policy, Politics, Psychology etc

Research-based jobs: academic or private sector

Social work, youth work, community work Police force or probation work Human resources Civil Service and Local Government
