Physics A Level at Nightingale Academy

Course description

A-Level Physics is an extremely demanding course, completely unlike anything you have encountered at GCSE. It is also far more rewarding than anything you have done at GCSE. You will learn valuable new skills, acquire interesting new knowledge, surprise yourself with your achievements, feel pressure that will test your perseverance and eventually be rewarded by your achievements.

Course content

You will cover units over the course of the two years of study, the core content;

Measurements and their errors, particles and radiation, waves, mechanics and materials, electricity, further mechanics and thermal physics, fields and their consequences and nuclear physics.

You will then have the opportunity to select one optional unit from the list below;

Astrophysics, Medical physics, Engineering physics, Turning points in physics and Electronics

The course is assessed by three examinations at the end of year 13.

Entry requirements

General entry requirement plus grade B or better in Core and Applied Science or Physics 

Future opportunities

Physics A Level will prepare students for a career or further study in Physics,  Mathematics, Engineering, Architecture, one of the other sciences or related areas. It is considered a facilitating subject by Russell Group universities, so also sits well alongside contrasting subjects.

It can lead to a wide variety of careers including : Geophysicist/field seismologist, Engineer, Lecturer, Metallurgist, Research scientist, Investment analyst, Meteorologist, Nuclear Engineer, Systems  developer.
