A Level Photography at Theale Green School

Course description

This course will help to develop your ability to appreciate the visual world and respond in a range of different styles, e.g. Documentary, Fine Art Photography, Portraiture, Fashion and Landscape photography. 50% Coursework, produced in the form of one introductory unit and one main coursework unit. The introductory unit allows time at the start of the course to introduce students to skills in camera control, developing and creating successful images.

Coursework topics will be negotiated with staff in the second term. 50% Exam, completed as a unit of study which lasts for a minimum of two months. The exam unit is similar in nature to coursework except the topic is selected by students from a list issued by the exam board. The project will include a five hour timed exam in which students will develop ideas for their final piece.

The exam final piece is not completed in exam time. The A2 course will start with a personal study which takes the form of an illustrated written analysis of a photographer or photographic genre. The A2 course also contains coursework and exam units. The final exam is fifteen hours in length allowing students to produce their final response to the exam topic in exam conditions.

Lessons include a range of practical activities including camera control, darkroom processes, composition, lighting control, portraiture/fashion photography, shooting on location, computer manipulation, presentation skills and working to a professional brief. Types of study include independent learning, research, the effects of depth of field, practical and analytical examination of photographer’s work, creative development of ideas, creation of a series of final images that represent their intentions for coursework projects.

Entry requirements

An interest in further studies in photography or an aptitude for composing photographs. Grade C in English and preferably a grade C in Art or Art Graphics or Computers.
