Applied Science (Medical Science) Level 3 BTEC Extended Diploma at Redbridge College

Course description

This advanced practical course is for people who wish to pursue a career in the Medical Sector (or related professions); including medical science, biomedical science, pharmacy and nursing. You’ll complete projects and assignments based on real workplace situations, activities and demands. At the end of the course you’ll be ready to enter employment, or progress to a related course at university. This qualification is equivalent to three A-Levels, and if you achieve three distinctions you can earn 420 UCAS points for entry to Higher Education.

Course content

Units you will study include:

  • Fundamentals of science
  • Industrial chemical reactions
  • Physiology of human body systems
  • Scientific investigations
  • Physiology of human regulation and reproduction
  • Practical chemical analysis.

Plus a range of specialist units from the following:

  • Microbiology
  • Psychology
  • Medical Physics Techniques
  • Chemistry
  • Astronomy
  • Biochemistry
  • Mathematics

Entry requirements

You will be expected to have four GCSEs at C grade or above, including English or Maths, or equivalent vocational qualifications at Level 2.


You'll be taught by our highly skilled team of staff who will pass on their years of industry knowledge and experience to you. You will be assessed through coursework covering practical sessions in the laboratory, educational visits and written work. The emphasis will be on continuous assessment, rather than end-of-year examinations.

Future opportunities

On successful completion of this course you will have the opportunity to further enhance your skills and knowledge by progressing to university, where you can study a science-related degree or HNC. You could also choose after successfully completing both the course and relevant degree to enter employment in any of the following areas:
