Course description

Why study Mathematics at A2 Level?It is difficult to overstate the importance of maths in todays' world. The skills gained on a maths course are essential for successful progression in education and employment. Maths has links with science, engineering and technology and is important to a range of other subjects. The study of maths also develops skills in logical thinking and analysis which are highly valued by employers.What's on the course?We will study the Core 3 and 4 modules which develop the skills in algebra, geometry, trigonometry and calculus that you started at AS level.The third module is an applied course in Mechanics, which introduces physical topics such as Newton's Laws of Motion, Friction and Momentum.

Entry requirements

A pass at AS level Mathematics, at least a grade D is recommended.

Assessment

Assessment is through three external exams each lasting an hour and a half.

Financial information

You will need to buy a textbook for each module of the course.You will also need a suitable calculator.

Future opportunities

Once you have finished A2 maths you will have picked up a range of useful skills, including the ability to analyse a problem and think logically. These will be a really big help at university and in employment.An A level in maths is required for a number of courses, including engineering, IT, computer science, accountancy and physical sciences. It is also useful for courses in management, business studies and economics.If you want to enter employment, an A level maths qualification is useful for a career in IT, the financial sector and many other fields.
