Entry requirements

5 GCSEs or equivalent including Maths and English at grade 5 or above and an additional 3 at grade A*- C.

Excellent attendance during Year 11 (at least above 90%).

Behaviour and attitude to learning across all GCSE subjects studied to be at least good.

In exceptional circumstances students with a good GCSE profile but have not achieved either Maths or English to a grade 5 at the start of the programme may be considered.

We encourage all students to start with a 3 A level programme. However, in exceptional circumstances, we will consider a student studying a 4th subject.

The specification is designed to be taken over two years with all assessments taken at the end of the course. This is a linear qualification. In order to achieve the award, students must complete all exams in May/June of a single year.

20% of the marks given in exam papers will be based on mathematical skills and 15% will assess knowledge, skills and understanding in relation to practical work. The rest will be content and application based.

Future opportunities

The skills acquired through pursuing Chemistry provide a pathway to many future careers ranging from Business, Journalism and Law. Chemistry is also essential for those wishing to study Medicine, Veterinary Science, Pharmacy, Chemical Engineering and Forensic Science.
