Course description

The AQA Advanced Subsidiary GCE and Advanced GCE Musicspecifications extend the GCSE skills of Performing, Composing andListening, in ways which emphasise their interdependence. TheAdvanced Subsidiary GCE specification is designed to be both a freestanding,coherent and rounded whole, and a secure foundation forfurther study to Advanced GCE. There are no limits on the instruments(or voices) and types of repertoire which may be presented inperformance, encouraging study of the widest possible range of musicfrom folk, popular and classical traditions of non-Western origin as wellas those of jazz and the Western classical and popular traditions.Opportunities are afforded in both the Advanced Subsidiary GCE andAdvanced GCE specifications to develop skills in the handling of MusicTechnology both as a tool and as a performing and composing medium inits own right.AS Course:Course Content• Influences on Music• Composing – Creating Musical Ideas; Composition or TechnicalExercises or Arrangement• Performing: Interpreting Musical Ideas—Two performances, each5-8 minutes in lengthIf you progress to A2 you will study:• Music in Context• Composing – Developing Musical ideas• Performing – A Musical Performance-Solo Performance up to 15minutes in lengthAdditional Information:The course is aimed at students who have practical musical abilityapproximately equivalent to Associated Board Grade 5 standard

Entry requirements

The standard entry criteria to study in the sixth form is an 9-4 or A*-C in at least seven different subjects, including mathematics which would usually be at grade 4 or above (equivalent to grade C in previous years).


To study other subjects already taken at GCSE you must achieve  at least a grade 5 or C grade or above in that subject.
