Music at Hanham Woods Academy

Course description

The course provides an excellent basis for lifelong learning and for higher education courses in Music.

Unit 1: Performing Students will perform a 5-6 minute assessed performance as a soloist and/or in an ensemble. Students are free to choose music in any style and any instrument(s) and/or voice(s) are acceptable.

Unit 2: Composing Students will develop their composition skills leading to the creation of a three-minute piece to a chosen brief. Students also write a CD sleeve note to describe aspects of their final composition and explain how other pieces of music have influenced it.

Unit 3: Developing Musical Understanding This Unit concerns listening to music and understanding how it works. Students will study set works from an anthology and are assessed through a 2 hour examination, set and marked by the Exam Board Students taking AS and A2 Music have gone on to study Music or Music Technology at university and to follow careers in music teaching, arts administration, performing and music technology. This course also provides essential key skills, which are useful in any career.

Entry requirements

Performance skills on an instrument, which should be around Grade 5 by the end of the course, students without instrumental skills will find that the Music Technology course is more appropriate

The ability to read music GCSE

Music at Grade B or above is essential
