Applied Science Diploma Level 2 at Boston College

Course description

This course involves elements of biology, chemistry and physics. 

You will study topics such as: Chemistry and our earth, energy and our universe, Biology and our Environment, The Living Body, Science in Medicine and Chemical Analysis and Detection. 

You will also study an additional GCSE making the course equivalent to 5 GCSEs. 

Course content

You will study a wide range of units including: 

- Principles of Science 
- Chemistry and our earth 
- Energy and our universe 
- Biology and our environment 
- Health applications of life science 
- The Living Body 
- Science in Medicine 
- Chemical analysis and detection 
- Biotechnology procedures and applications 

You will have access to well-equipped laboratories and computer facilities during your course. You will also have a personal tutor to help support your studies. 

In addition to your course, you will also study either Functional Skills or GCSE English and Maths, dependent on your current GCSE grade. 

You will also be expected to carry out work experience during your time on the course.

Entry requirements

4 GCSEs at grades D or above (New GCSE grade - 3 or above) including English and Maths (or equivalent).


Each unit is College assessed and are awarded at pass, merit or distinction. 

The overall grade for the qualification depends on the grades for individual units.

Future opportunities

Successful completion of this course can lead to going on to study either the Analytical and Laboratory Science or Medical Science 90 Credit and Extended Diploma Level 3 course at Boston College. 

Successful completion of either Level 3 course can then lead on to the Applied Biology HNC and HND
