Physics A Level at Samuel Ryder Academy

Course description

Physics is a fundamental science subject and the key to understanding the world around us and the world beyond us. Physics is the study of matter, energy, force and motion, which can challenge our imagination and lead to world-changing discoveries such as lasers and computers.

This course has been developed for students who wish to continue with a study of Physics after GCSE. Some students may wish to follow a Physics course for only one year as an AS GCE, in order to broaden their curriculum. Others will continue their course for a further year to achieve A2. This A-Level will prepare students to progress into further education, to follow courses in Physics, Engineering, one of the other sciences or related subjects, or to enter employment where a knowledge of physics would be useful.

At AS you will develop knowledge and understanding of key concepts such as forces and motion, energy, electrical circuits, waves and quantum physics.

At A2 study will focus more closely on physical processes within the universe, subatomic particles and force fields and making important links between different areas of physics.

You will learn and practise practical skills whilst studying the theoretical topics and complete practical assessment tasks throughout the year.

Entry requirements

A minimum of five GCSE grades A* to C including English is required in addition to the subject specific requirements for those subjects intended for study at Advanced Level or BTEC.

Candidates are also invited to attend an interview. On the basis of their interviews and in the case of external applications, a report from their current school is also required. An offer of a conditional place may then be made but the offer remains provisional until the students’ results are known.

It is essential that you achieve a B grade or higher in Additional Science or Physics GCSE. However, consideration will be given for students with C grades. You should also have achieved a grade B or higher in Maths at GCSE. It is useful if you also take Mathematics to AS or A2 level, but this is not essential but you definitely need a good positive attitude to study.

This subject assumes an understanding of the Physics components of GCSE science.

To continue onto the A2 course a D grade or above at AS is required
