German AS/A2 Level at Gillingham School

Course description

With the introduction of the new A Level this year, AS students have come in to contact with a range of stimulating and motivating topics. In the autumn term students get to explore the media and how it relates to Germany. Topics include the influence of TV, advertising, press, communication and the internet. Their second topic looks at healthy lifestyles, keeping fit, tourism and health issues e.g. Illness, eating disorders and drugs. The spring term focuses on popular culture highlighting image, fashion, celebrities, citizenship and values and cinema and music. Families and friends is the final topic which looks at relationships, marriage and partnership.

For A2, candidates study two Cultural Topics, together with the Environment, the Multicultural Society and Contemporary Social Issues. Studying the Environment encompasses pollution, energy and protecting the planet. The Multicultural Society examines immigration, integration and racism whilst Contemporary Social Issues include wealth and poverty, law and order and the impact of scientific and technological progress. The first Cultural Topic explores the history, geography, industry and economy of Berlin as a German speaking region. The second Cultural Topic studies a work of literature. For the second year students will study ‘Der Vorleser’ a magnificent novel which was recently turned into a very successful film starring Kate Winslet.
