Film Studies A Level *FEES PAYABLE* at Royal Hospital School

Course description

To deepen your understanding of film, the major art form of the 21st century. You will develop your skills of observation, analysis and reflection, as well as your creative and practical talents.

With its emphases on visual storytelling and aesthetics, the course extends areas of experience covered by English Literature and Art History specifications. The subject is grounded in significant skills of analysis and expression and is useful for progression to Arts and Humanities degree courses.

Course content

The principal focus across the course is reading film as a ‘text’, an idea pursued through both analysis and creative work.

AS Course
You will explore the relationship between the film and the individual by analysing how the micro features of existing films create meanings, before attempting to make meaning of your own in the form of a short film. The focus then shifts to the AS exam; you will learn about producers and audiences and the relationship between them, while also exploring the role of the macro features of film in constructing meanings. You will study these aspects within the context of British and American Film.

A2 Course
You will be required to complete a research project into a specific area of filmmaking, compiling a presentation of your findings, before embarking on a creative project in which you will put your knowledge of film-making in to practice. Your A2 exam will ask you to study complex films from the various contexts of world cinema, while also discussing issues of spectatorship and completing an in-depth study of a prescribed film, utilising the key skills nurtured throughout the AS and A2 courses.

At AS Level, you will be required to create short film sequences or a complete short film, as well as analysing how meaning is created in a short film sequence of your own choosing. At A2 level, you will complete a research project into a specific area of film-making, before creating another short film of your own, influenced by your studies at AS and A2.
