Advancing Physics at Seaton Burn College

Course description


In Year 1 you will study: The key Engineering principles of Motion, Forces in action, Work and energy. This is then followed by a thorough exploration of the core principles of electrical engineering, Electric current, Resistance, DC circuits. Finally, you will be presented with an opportunity to study the bizarre and fascinating world of quantum mechanics and wave particle duality. As Niels Bohr famously said >“If quantum mechanics hasn’t profoundly shocked you, you haven’t understood it yet.”


In Year 2 you will study: The scientific principles laid down five hundred years ago by the greatest scientist who has ever lived, Sir Isaac Newton. You will become expert in the use and application of Newton’s laws and Momentum, Circular Motion and Oscillations. You will then learn about the Physics of George Stephenson and the industrial revolution in the Thermal Physics topic. Electric and Magnetic fields and Capacitors are next. Probably, the most exciting topics in the A2 course are left to the end. You will have your mind blown by the Nuclear physics, Medical imaging and Cosmology Units.

Entry requirements

At least 5 GCSE grades A* to C including at least 2 grade B in a sciencesubject and grade B in both Maths and English.
